Resilient and Reliable: The Long-Term Benefits of Electrical Vehicle Charging Stations

Understanding the Importance of EV Charging Infrastructure

With the increasing number of electric vehicles (EVs) on the road, a robust and reliable EV charging infrastructure has become crucial. It promotes the usage of EVs and also ensures EV owners have a seamless and hassle-free experience. Miller’s experts can help with site design and work closely with our in-house engineering team to ensure the site fits the needs and goals of our customers.

EV charging infrastructure is about more than just setting up charging stations. It involves careful planning, strategizing, and implementing to ensure a smooth transition from conventional vehicles to EVs.

Understanding EV charger types results in improved functionality, resiliency, and reliability for your system.

The Different Types of EV Chargers

Efficient charging infrastructure starts with determining the type of EV charger your project requires.  EV chargers come in three different speeds: Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 chargers (also known as DC Fast Chargers).

Level 1 chargers are the most basic type of EV chargers

These chargers can be plugged into a standard electrical outlet, making them convenient for home use. However, they provide a slow charging rate, typically offering about 3 to 5 miles of range per hour of charging. This requires charging sometimes upwards of 20 hours of charge time. Miller EV Solutions does not provide Level 1 because they are not used in commercial settings.

Level 2 chargers, on the other hand, provide a much faster charging rate

They can require a dedicated 240-volt circuit (similar to a clothes dryer or oven) and can provide about 10 to 60 miles of range per hour of charging with a maximum output of 19.2 kWh.

Level 3 chargers are the fastest type of EV chargers available

They can charge an EV’s battery to 80% in about 20 to 30 minutes. They are specialized, high-power equipment installed in commercial or public places, like shopping centers, restaurants, or highways.

Understanding the Resiliency and Reliability of EV Chargers

EV chargers’ resiliency and reliability are necessary to ensure a seamless EV charging experience. Resiliency refers to the ability of the charging infrastructure to withstand and quickly recover from disruptions, such as power outages or natural disasters. On the other hand, reliability refers to the ability of the charging stations to provide effective charging services consistently.

Reliable EV chargers require robust construction and quality components. They should withstand harsh weather conditions and heavy usage. They must also be regularly maintained and updated to ensure their functionality and effectiveness. This includes checking the equipment for signs of wear or damage regularly. Our team of experts has a wide range of understanding regarding the variety of charging solutions available that fits the needs for a reliable system.

Resilient charging infrastructure, on the other hand, requires strategic planning and implementation, taking other factors into consideration. It involves setting up charging stations in locations less likely to be affected by power disruptions. It also includes implementing backup power solutions and redundancy systems to ensure continuous charging services even during power outages. Our team of experts also understand the need for redundancy and backup power solutions in times of trouble, such as hurricanes, and other forms of disruptions that can occur.
